Kemper County is located in the East Central portion of Mississippi on the Alabama border. Kemper County was formed on December 23, 1833, one of sixteen counties formed from land the Choctaw Indians ceeded with the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit. The county was named in honor of Virginia native Colonel Reuben Kemper who moved with his brothers Samuel and Nathan to the Fort Adams area, became a leader of the 1811 West Florida Rebellion against Spain, and fought under Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. Unfortunately for genealogists, the Kemper County Courthouse burned in 1882, resulting in a total loss of all county records up to that time. The county has a total area of 767.00 square miles of which 766.13 square miles is land and 0.87 square miles (0.11%) is water. The population recorded in the 1840 Federal Census was 7,663. The 2010 census recorded 10,456 residents in the county. Neighboring counties are Noxubee County (north), Sumter County, Alabama (east), Lauderdale County (south), Neshoba County (west), and Winston County (northwest). Communities in the county include De Kalb, Scooba, Preston, Porterville, Bogue Chitto (mostly in Neshoba County), Electric Mills, Gholson, Kellis Store, Minden, Moscow, Union Hill, and Wahalak.
